it could! but i think whether a question is rhetorical or not, it isn't a figure of speech that explicitly conveys a truth value (i.e., you couldn't say it's true or false)

consider that its negative, "is there (no / not a) joke here?" is pretty much exactly the same thing, which (barring sarcasm) isn't how statements work

I think that, although meaning here is heavily derived from context, implied meaning is enough to carry an implied truth value, which is good enough for certain statements that might be added for flavour, such as "correct me if I'm wrong," and also enough for agreements/disagreements to be formulated.

also, can we have discussions like this more often

I'm certainly not stopping you

start one whenever you want

in some sense i think the added fuzziness of something like "correct me if i'm wrong" is built into a rhetorical question which is inherently softer than an outright statement

i don't know! does anyone else want to weigh in? i'm not discounting rants' view; i don't want to just have a back and forth about it

So that file cabinet has been there all along? Fuchsia and Baby Blue never seemed to need a file cabinet. I'd have thought the forms were in a drawer in the booth itself. Oh well.

What keeps people from vandalizing/robbing the booth at night, anyway? I suppose the obvious answer is that they're afraid of reprisals from The Devil, but still.

Correct me if I'm wrong but THAT'S the sentiment that prompted you to make your first post? Well, whatever suits you.

Yes. Answering a rhetorical question in such a way would be an expression of disagreement.

The exchange earlier in this thread could have just as well went:
"I don't think there's a joke here."
"I do, it's (...)"

That was s'posed to be a joke. ;_; Maybe I'm too new for jokes.

Upon further inspection, it looks like someone is enjoying discussing how rhetorical questions work, so I'm okay with my joke failing.

I think it is a way to say, "I am welcome to the idea of being wrong. I understand that I don't know everything. However, I want to share this thought I have, which is correct or useful as far as I know."

also, the file cabinet just seems to appear at need, and then disappear again. i think this is some sort of comic trope that i am sure someone knows the name of.
