Yeah, my joke aside stripey pretty much nails it. Since the comic is going pretty deep into gender issues that's the popular conversation topic, specially understandable with the high use of metaphors.

Those arguments do occasionally bleed into strips that aren't about feminism because... Well, it's the trending topic. But other things do pop up here and there. This one time we had an excellent discussion about taboos and censorship with basically no feminism in the middle.

I think it boils down to the idea of America abusing Liberty in a very, very literal way. He knows it's there, but just does not get it. Still, as long as Liberty sees hope in the one that has shown so much promise in the past, she will not give up. Because Liberty's a fighter.

But does he actually represent those ideologies themselves, or does he represent a country and a culture that is, itself, bound up in them?

I think we might just be talking past each other here.

It was your, "to be fair" segue that really got me. No, it's not being "fair" to Sam to call him a clueless dog. That may be what he's acting like, but going with that argument just plays into stupid self-depreciating ploys that male culture pulls to justify and excuse what is, under any rational light, indefensibly selfish human behavior. He can be better than that. Maybe he won't, because he's a cartoon character and he does what Tat needs him to do for the story and its points, but if he is just a dog then why the heck care about him at all? If he is just a dog, then I -am- rooting for Liberty to kick his ass out and go have an affair with Sweden or something.

segue- good word! hadn't seen that one before. (underlined^^^)- and thatís how i like to think about the comic... as a comic. also, kicking him out for being a dog is one way tat likes to handle this situation. liberty has thrown him out before for his dogma, and he's spent plenty of time in the doghouse as well, look at panel 4. (couldn't help myself :) ) if this WAS real she'd probably be with Switzerland or New Zealand by now, one of my original thoughts when tat first introduced these two. this was an alternative view i came up with to what... because i donít think thatís completely fair either.Ö though both are probably true to some extent :)

Edit: feeling a little stupid, never seen the word segue written before :P

Who knows, maybe Tat is setting up for a really powerful metaphor of Sam only being married to the -idea- of Liberty and not realizing that he's losing her by not actually walking the walk.

Draping the laptop over the back of the sofa doesn't seem very safe.

I feel somewhat annoyed that without any mention of BDSM, someone is always eager to chime in about how BDSM IS OK AND OFTEN RESPECTFUL AND BLAH BLAH BLAH.

Ok, we fucking get it, BDSM is a purely consensual act, that no one actually mentioned as regards porn being degrading. Stop being so fucking defensive BDSM practitioners.

Yeah I don't mind someone jumping in to defend BDSM, as on the first page people got started early talking about it and were shortly making assumptions.

However, yeah I really actually get annoyed at the amount of people that think BDSM has anything to do with the overall problem of porn.

Here's my thoughts plain and simple.

BDSM is an admitted kink. It's labeled. It's purposeful. And...It's a minor part of porn out there. Check. Got it. The amount of degrading stuff done to women in porn that's marketed as "ordinary" is so ridiculous, it should be apparent to people that porn has degrading views on women. The amount of insults and subjugating speech ("Who's your daddy?", etc) not to mention physically dominating way men take women as if the woman likes being treated like an emotionless rag doll. This is considered normal, even though the vast majority of women would want nothing to do with sex that treats them like that. The few that might, probably do so more as their own personal kink and only want to with someone who understands the limits and plays along, which is then in that case similar to the BDSM community.
