More of the plot to be honest. I'm straight so I dislike M/M by nature but I can tolerate it provided the story itself is good and the relationship itself isn't the central focus of the story.

Are you saying that if someone is straight, they are going to be predisposed to actively dislike portrayals of gay relationships? Or just that, for yourself, your orientation means that m/m fic doesn't appeal to you/resonate with you/catch your interest?

On the topic of fanfiction that is purely pornographic, I'd like to ask why men can watch porn and enjoy porn and know it's just for jerking off but then they don't understand the purpose of sex-centered fanfiction? It's literally the exact same thing, for practically the exact same reason... But geared more towards women. :I How can you think it's gross, but not also think that regular porn is gross...

And on the topic of being gay and enjoying sexy fanfiction - I think it goes hand in the hand with the whole "kinkshaming" problem, you don't have any control over what turns you on. I'm a pansexual woman and I am happy to be with guys but I just can't get off to straight porn. It's not interesting to me...

Honestly, there's times when fiction that is aligned with my IRL preferences doesn't "work" for me and times fiction that is not aligned with my IRL preferences does. It depends on the individual product.

In the end it comes down to that if there is good fanfic or bad fanfic it's determined by the quality of the writing. Everything else is a matter of taste.

I like to see fanfiction as Hollywood movies. There's a ton of crap but there are some excellent gems and they're not that hard to find if you're willing to look. The only difference is that if you leave a critique, the author is more likely to listen to you. xD

You're only allowed to enjoy... I don't know. Fanfic about calculators. Or brass-rubbing, or something.

I worry that I'm a hypocrite, because in my fandom (Tin Man), I'm not fond of the two het pairings some people portray. But I think it's more because I see one as more of a surrogate father-daughter relationship, and because the other always seems to be heavy with torture overtones, and that's not my thing. But I'm pretty sure my disinterest is down to that, and not the fact that it's het...

I'm posting at arse o'clock in the morning again. If anything I just said makes no sense, I blame it on that!

You can only read about platonic relationships. Or I guess romantic ones that don't involve any sex.

So my solution to this concern (back when I had it, way before the "oh shit I'm ace" realization and when I was still laboring under the impression I was just a dysfunctional straight girl) was to cultivate many many fandoms and pick my favorite pairings of the lot. It's really added some nice variety. Also, ALL THE FANDOM GOODNESS. I met a lot of cool people. It was a good plan, would recommend. It's really not necessary to abandon your ship.

That... would be some pretty slim pickings.

My fanfic rarely had romantic relationships - unless it was based on an RPG or written with a friend. There was one based on a weird dream I had as well. Otherwise, it was all diplomacy and politics and stuff.

I was also the kid who, when given the task of writing a sixth grade essay aboutsomething I liked, chose the bill of rights. (While everyone else sensibly talked about puppies and rock stars.)

And my Original Character(tm) was so awesome at math they were contracted by the government to lower the debt ceiling (Which I really have to laugh abput now I understand a bit more about economics.) OMG FISCAL POLICY! SOCIOECONOMICS!

Oldest original story I ever wrote was about how a girl got picked on a lot and then she was pushed or something and broke her leg and all the people that picked on her felt bad.

I was not a subtle kid.

I was also kind of stupid for thinking breaking my leg would make other kids be nice to me.

Also it had a unicorn in it.

I'd say I can't make this shit up but apparently when I was 8 I totally did.

Was the unicorn nice to the kid at least?

My finest moment was a story about vampire desks that ate all the other unsuspecting students. That one was illustrated with pictures, I think.

Yeah, the unicorn was totally cool.

The vampire desks sound pretty fun, actually.
