To say I understand would be an insult, as I said, I have read the forums, but not EVERYTHING on the forums, probably only half in the last 6 months to be honest. So the long standing battles you and others have had to fight I'm coming into things very late in the game. So being Grumpy, or having the tactic of ostrasizing until the undesirables learn to grow up or leave is certainly your choice and I respect that.

I'm going to try and make myself welcome, even to a grumpus like yourself, thank you for your honesty, I hope there will come a day when seeing me in a thread you'll welcome me like a friend rather than the annoyance I seem to have cultivated so far. Razz

This strip actually reminded me of Guest...
In his case, he probably deserved it, but still...

It's cool. Thank you for listening to my ventings.

I'm gonna take my grumpus self to the kitchen and start prepping tasty foods and chilling with music.

But no really I can't express how warm and fuzzy it makes me feel to watch the cool newbies go from "I plan to rationally discuss things and change minds!" to "OH MY FUCKING GOD SHUT UP." because it's a path I walked not that long ago and it's kind of nice to know I have company.

You go talk to him and let us know how it goes.

For the record, we used to really like Guest (he's been around like a decade). And then he became a huge asshole who mocks women for being afraid of rape and defended the presence of child porn on reddit (and a variety of other awful things), and now we don't. I don't really care how anyone views that, because usually if we start listing off the shit he's said they go, "Oh, crap, I've been defending Hitler."

I'm as warm and squishy as they come to new people (well... I'm at least not usually a dick right out of the gate [well...]), but Guest isn't new. When you know someone for 10 years you don't have to treat them like they're an entirely new person every time you see them. That would be patently ridiculous.

Onimaru, I don't remember your first post, but I will be welcoming and friendly to you, so much as I can.

Unless, like Samsally described, I become a grouchy old salt as I spend more time on the forums.

Onimaru's first post, over in the newbie waystation:

Onimaru wrote:
Long time reader of the comic, only a very recent reader of the Forums and looking to enjoy verbally sparring with a few folks over the many issues that Tatsuya is encouraging us to think about with the direction of his comics.

I have a penchant for bludgeoning Bullshit with Logic with no regard to how or why someone might feel strongly about something if they can't argue it in any manner that shows that it's anything other than their own opinion, so honestly I sadly think I'll not be popular around here.

However I will avoid personal attacks, even if others levy them at me, but if you do hate me for what I say and wish to counter it please do so. But in an informed manner, if you degenerate into vulgar insults with no substance I'll simply ignore you.

That being said, I like to think of myself as friendly and anybody that treats me kindly will receive nothing but the same in return. Please don't take anything I say on a matter personally..... Actually scrap that, much of what I say can and will be taken personally, to think you can argue against someone's beliefs without your words being taken personally is a foolish notion. In that case let me rephrase, I will be arguing points of contention and discussing my opinion against your own, I will be attempting to make you understand WHY I disagree with your stance, not that I think you are worthless for having a different opinion from my own. I hope that the majority of those I speak with will understand that.

Well that doesn't seem quite so bad. Perhaps a bit more self-confidence in it than I could ever muster, but nothing that really bothers me.

As to the somewhat condescending tone, I think everyone likes to feel a sense of intellectual superiority once in a while. I certainly do, at least privately.

I won't begrudge anyone that, so long as it isn't too persistent.

Oh, but what does anyone care what I think about Onimaru?

I can hardly be said to be representative of the entire community.

It seems the only thing you begrudge anyone is their begrudging.

Not really... but don't feel bad, there are maybe four or five people here whose opinions mean anything to me. The rest of you are just decorations I like more or less depending on whether you're actively irritating me.

Which is really none of my business either... I just begrudge my own begrudging...

And I'm starting to feel like more and more of an ass the more I post about this, so I should probably shut up now.

If it matters (and isn't presumptuous,) I do try to make it a case-by-case thing.

To combine the wise, wise words of a couple of friends of mine: Give people a chance to show you who they really are. And then, when someone has shown you who they are, believe them.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that freely admits to using the forum as their own personal sounding board, blog, diary, confessional, source of catharsis, vent of frustration, therapist, confidant, and general receptacle of all the feelings that build up during the day. I freely admit to using this forum as the depository for worst of my emotional baggage, but I like to think that I contribute something worthwhile but at the very least I'm here for you to dump your problems on just as I have done to others.

I dunno... it's not like I ignore everyone and just talk about myself (obviously; and neither do you) I just don't care if most of you like me. Or agree with me. Which isn't the same as not caring about you, I guess, since for instance I've always hoped that your treatment would work and that you would finally take a shower (FFS).

okay, yeah, that didn't exactly read the way I intended it to and my subsequent attempts at a clearer explanation keep driving off into tangents. lets just say I was agreeing with your post and look at it in a similar way.
