Yeah, this stuff pisses me off to no end.

My daughter is a HUGE fan of Spiderman, The Hulk... Well, all of the Avengers really, but those are her favorites. Unfortunately, for her last birthday I couldn't find a single superhero card that didn't say something like "To the birthday BOY"... Argg..

At least the places I go to don't specifically label Boy and Girl sections for toys.

The only proper way to refer to the girls' toy aisle is The Pink Menace.

Stop gender-segregating children's toys. Fuck you.

Unfortunately, there is research to back this up.

Boys simply prefer objects which move, like toy cars, or which are capable of mock violence; while girls prefer role playing, particularly social role playing.
Now does that role playing have to be the role playing of traditional gender roles? No. But girls still prefer toys which are used as props for their imagination, while boys use the toy as the primary focus of play. That's just how it is.

If I may provide a counter-argument: fuck you.

also, they were posted during the same minute, so I don't know which one was first, since I wasn't sitting here constantly refreshing the page, but the other thread was started way better.

Yet it was THIS one that got the replies. Democracy rules!

On that note, in order to change this so called "toy segregation," there simply needs to be demand. So if any of you have daughters/little sisters/young cousins/adorable little tots affiliated with you in some way, make them a present of something usually associated with the other gender.

Or, considering what Hydra said, it might be better to get things that have no such associations (like board games).

No, that's not how we fix this problem. You still have the damn pink aisle of toys. The only way to fix it is to be the owner of the damn toy stores/manufactures/etc or to influence those people,

and I doubt they give a damn if you do that. Despite the best of efforts of parents et al the stores etc have tremendous influence over societal (including children's) views on this matter, and direct influence over the products.

What a startlingly original thesis. I shall never see a toy the same way again.

I think all kids should have LEGOs, (real LEGOS, none of that silly LEGO Friends BS), and they can make their own toys based on their own desires and preferences.

Given time, resources, and effort, you can build anything you want with LEGOs. So it suddenly doesn't matter much whether boys prefer a certain kind of play and girls prefer a certain kind of play. When you build the things you play with yourself, your own way, you can play however you prefer.

Cardboard boxes are good too. You can always find something to do with a good box.

I just don't remember the stripper pole as a girls toy

Maybe this is a recent development

OK, this is one that get the "assigned gender roles complaining" correct. Women= beautiful housewives in aprons. Men= Prince-Lords of action, change, bravery and intellect.
It does seem a little one-sided as all the useful roles goes to the boys, but as a rule we don't look as good in thongs. And our cookies arn't as good.

At least kids TV seems to be getting more feministic. From what I watch of it, anyways. Which is mostly ponies, so I'm probably biased, but... that's something at least. And that's in the toy isle too so... beacon of hope?
