For some reason, there's a Java app trying to run when I open up these forums. I don't know what it is, and I'm not willing to risk it, and so far I've been lazy to attempt to open it in a virtual machine.

Does anyone know?

You know, somebody else was getting it and managed to get rid of it with... adblock, maybe? I don't remember. It keeps happening on my laptop but I haven't figured out how to get rid of it though so I'm doing something wrong.

I doubt it's adblock; I get that too and I'm running adblock.

Unless you mean that adblock is CAUSING it in which case I'm clueless.

You should disable the Java browser plugin. It's really not good for much unless you're trying to run the browser demo version of Minecraft, and lately it's been a huge focal point for cyberattacks on end users.

Aaah, I'll try that when I get home.

Is it just an add-on in firefox?

Yep. In FF it's Addons->Plugins->Java Platform SE [some number].

Chrome: type chrome://plugins and click Disable under the Java plugin entry.

IE: Tools->Manage Plugins->All Items and disable anything that starts with the name Java.

Safari: Preferences->Security->Web Content and untick the Enable Java box.

You don't have to uninstall Java from your system, trimming it from the browser is usually enough. Most of the common exploits are web-based.

Most 'malware issues' associated with this forum are usually from ads, or more specifically it's images for ads hosted on questionable domains. Said images may or may not be malicious. Try dropping Tat a message via IM on the forums. Make it formal and polite and include maybe a screen cap of what's running.

I had this problem when looking at Sinfest in a computer at work. My computer at home blocks Java as well, so I think that's a good bet.

Your assessment of the situation is inaccurate.

Also, I rather dislike Java, but not for any reason relevant to the topic of this thread, since I never even installed any browser plugins for it.

Java is a program that has continual security updates for good reason.

remote ad hijacking + continuous internet connection + corrupt java install = danger

Unlikely, but hey, couldn't hurt to check.

Alternatively, Opera has ad blocking built in the program, so.....

Or couldn't they have used something like firebug?
