It might help if she took off the backpack...

'Nique used to get depressed quite effectively all by herself, long before she found out about the Patriarchy, so the strip doesn't seem to mean quite as much as it could.

addendum:

Okay, I don't know why the strip isn't showing, but it just isn't. Sorry 'bout that.

Let's grant that 'Nique suffers mild depression. It's still awful shit that she needs to deal with patriarchal norms on top of that.

Or that commonly-upheld patriarchal norms can induce, or exacerbate those feelings.

If Monique sees stuff in such a black shade ever since she took the pill, no wonder she's frustrated and slightly hostile about men. I'm not sure that seeing this 24/7 is good for your mental health.

Oppression is not a fit state for cultivating mentally healthy people. Sounds about right, then, that those faced with it daily may be less likely to be mentally healthy.

That said, Monique is quite well adjusted, considering the shit she puts up with.

Given that the last strip was about something good happening to Monique, I think that she'll have a mini-redemption-arc soon. Monique is fiery, she won't take this for long.

Oppression coupled with floating, bright green words that follow you around actively taunting you at every moment of the day and reminding you of your situation.

Yeah, I probably wouldn't handle that very well.

I kinda have to question panel 2.

As someone who's dealt with people constantly commenting on my size and deciding it was an invitation to list off their favorite exercise tips and what foods to avoid (often while I'm trying to eat said foods), I don't really see it as something that specifically targets women. I mean, women are expected to be thin, but on the flip side, guys are expected to be ripped and have a 6-pack.

There are standards for both sexes, but the ones for women are much more enforced.

I guess.

Tell that to the people who called me a fat fuck on a daily basis for a solid 5 years, and only stopped in senior year because they were scared of me at that point.

Unrelated note: Looking at the old sinfest comic that Ronald posted and today's, it's amazing how much Tat's style has been refined over time.

I am sorry you feel so much pressure to have a bodybuilder's physique. I have never been under such pressure from anyone except myself.

But then, I spend my time with theatre kids, so I may not have a full perspective on the matter.
