ok - they used height as a control factor, which makes sense, since height itself has been shown to influence salary (so if you have 2 people with the same bmi, all other things being equal, the taller one will get paid more). they've got a long footnote explaining problematic features of bmi, so they definitely thought it through. they've also thrown a lot of other controls into the model - education, training, marital status, age, self-esteem measures, job tenure and complexity, etc., etc. - so even controlling for a number of other things that can affect salary, weight _still_ has a significant effect. and that effect is more marked in the u.s. than in germany; they provide some information that suggest german society is less likely to be punitive towards overweight than u.s. society. but the effect for men and women is in the same direction for both countries - so in both cases, heavier women get paid less than thin ones while thin men get paid less than heavier men, but the slopes are much more dramatic in the u.s. data - in fact, in the u.s. data, thin women actually get paid more than thin men.

so yeah - looks like their methodology was solid, and the results are quite interesting. thanks for the link, dogen!

so did i beat you home?

okay! What? Maybe this will make you ask me what country I am from, but to clarify: are you saying that women and men suffer the same when it comes to fat shaming and body shaming? What are you basing that off?

So, they did use weight, and they used self-report at that, which are both still a little odd. However, they controlled for height in their analysis, which is good.

This is the effect of weight relative to the group mean (women had a mean weight of 51kg, men 67kg). There were 11,253 participants, 57.6% of whom (~6,481) were men.

I realise that later in the thread you've clarified that it is your position that women and men suffer equally when it comes to body shaming, but again I'm not a hundred percent sure what you're basing that on. Do you mean among humans? Because I don't think that is a very responsible or accurate thing to say.

Good question.

also, Guest, have you ever considered not defending child pornography and mocking women's rape fears?

Well to be fair I was the one that precipitated this current line of discussion, based on my own personal experiences. Now we've entered the realm of proper research though, so that's pretty much moot.

that's the german curve, which is bad enough. but the u.s. curve is:
drat, something i can't seem to capture. it's figure 2 - put it up like a nice man, will you, dogen? thanks. (u.s. study is a bit smaller, final sample size =7661, but it is a 25-yr study, and they have multiple weight measurements, so they can look at the effect of change in weight).[/img]

...I have no idea about the child porn defence and the silly rape caution and really I had barely noticed your presence until now Guest.

You still look like an asshole to me. And really? If you were a creative asshole or an asshole worth arguing with it'd be one thing, but you are a plain boring asshole. You should be thankful to Dogen, he's dedicating you far more time than you deserve, while seemingly confident of the fact that it won't make you leave.

Nobody cares what you are arguing for. People want you to leave because you are full of shit.

on how internet censorship is worse than child porn and on women's rape fears being heeeeeeelarious

have fun.

this is not poisoning the well, because that would imply that the well is not already nothing but poison. it's an honest attempt to educate people who are new here about just what they're getting themselves into if they try to interact with Guest.

OH BUT IS IT STRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWMANNING?

Ah, you're right, of course. The US curve is pretty impressive:

As is this little bit of math logic:
Judge and Cable (2010) wrote:
The right-hand portion of Table 6 provides the effect size estimates for men and women for Study 2. As the table shows, a decrease in weight of 2 SDs results in a predicted earnings decrement of $17,535 for men and a predicted earnings increment of $22,283 for women. Conversely, an increase in weight of 2 SDs results in a predicted earnings increment of $14,889 for men and a predicted earnings decrement of $18,902 for women.

I notice no one is arguing opposite mouse on this issue anymore... people are impressed by your facts and figures. Wink

It's somehow sadder and less justifiable than I imagined. It's not like I needed it to tell that Guest is a bagful of dicks, but it helps to reinforce the opinion.
