Mom and Pop? That's a hell (no pun intended) of a spin on the story.

Yay for more plot!

"to fire up the press"
"to punch it up"
"to spin it"
"To go to town on them"

Had to add the "wholesome mom & pop doll" bit to keep it from invoking Poe's Law in relation these very forums.

That's... wow. The problem with a spin that hard is proper investigation and reporting by a non-hell-owned media entity can prove that they're resorting to all-out lying in their news stories. Surely there's a way to have made it sound almost as vicious without actually stating things that weren't true? Gloss over where the attack occurred, focus on the worked injured, the jobs lost, the effects on the unions and the economy, some carefully scripted interviews with families of injured workers, similar interviews with people who have been "terrorized" by the Sisterhood, etc. Keeps your bases covered against those nosy types who like to come in and blow the lid off things.

I shouldn't have to tell them how to do this: media corporations LIVE by how well they can distort the facts to represent whatever they want while still not actually being caught lying.

Why wouldn't the Devil lie if it is easier to do so? He's the Devil.

Also, this is a small four panel comic. There isn't room for so many words. Hence this short version of Hell's PR efforts.

Is there even such a thing in the Sinfest world as a media entity not owned by the Devil? I'd be interested to find out. Maybe the Sisterhood should start up a feminist news press. Maybe they already have.

Ooh I like this idea. I hope Tat does something like this. Actually I just hope he does something at all within the next month.

The problem is, even when those nosy types blow the lid off things, the media has already made an impression. It's like when lawyers come out with something in court and then 'withdraw' it. You can't erase things from people's minds. Maybe more enquiring folks will look at the inaccuracies and outright lies and condemn the people using them, but if what's being said already meshes with/reinforces their existing preconceptions, no amount of rebuttal is going to help.

All you have to do is look at the anti-sisterhood folks on this forum and see the mental gymnastics they'll go through to find the worst-possible interpretation of their actions.

As for the folks who aren't really prejudiced one way or the other, there'll be a certain proportion who are too apathetic to go beyond their first impressions, some who will believe what they're told because 'there's no smoke without fire', and some who will listen because it's coming from a dominant media source, so it must be true.

Case in point - the smear campaign being led by the UK government against disabled people. Fraudulent disability benefit claims were wildly exaggerated, and those figures then made it into the popular press, along with 'disabled scroungers' articles in the tabloids, followed by a rise in hate-crimes against people with disabilities. The original figures have been proven wrong time and again, but you can't erase the damage.

Sorry for the soapbox moment.

Yeah it's really unfortunate that the media is running full tilt into showing us how "freedom of the press" can basically be turned into a bad thing.

By, for example, suing to earn the right to lie to people.

I remember playing around with an idea for a short story where a country in an economic slump was changed by a set of mistaken calculations. The figures showed that things were better than expected, the information was widely disseminated by the media and the change in public perception led to increased spending, and eventually an economic revival (I have no maths or socioeconomics skills, so it would have mostly been bullshit).

The goverment, seeing how powerful the change is, seeds the press with more stories to manipulate the population and by the time it's really apparent what's happening, most people have become content to be lied to, because some of the lies eventually become reality, and they're sick of bad news anyway.

And then I gave up, because it wasn't really a work of fiction any more.

Some people say that the Sisterhood has taken a once-noble goal of equality for the sexes and turned it into an anti-feminist radicalization of gender politics that, at its core, demonstrates clear antipathy and pathological dehuminization of men to support a feeling of failure in their lives. In fact, some experts have concluded it to represent a fundamental chain in a road to not feminism but female supremacy as a goal, and that justifications for "women's only spaces" and the "destruction of porn" mirror similar justifications used for "whites only spaces" and "destruction of subversive texts" in previous fascist regimes. To talk about this disturbing trend of feminism being a cover for fascism and non-equal ideas, we've brought a panel of feminists and feminist experts. To start our roundtable, I would like to ask: Coulter, Malkin can you tell us about your own perspectives from trying to fix feminism from the inside? What have been the most disturbing events in your quest so far? Have you ever feared for your lives?
