While he is the Devil he is also apparently a father. A father that wants his son able to survive. I'm surprised no one has commented on how D didn't have the drones light up the guys till Lil E took a stand to face them. Apparently all he wanted was for him to not just take it.

I didn't read this as, "Aw, Devil cares for his son." This is patriarchal training for men in action. Lil E is being taught in baby steps about how to use intimidation and force, and how to take his place in a hierarchy of male violence. The Devil providing this sort of "playpen" area for Lil E to gain confidence in his ability to use force and violence is the essence of male privilege. This is exactly how young boys and men at the "top" of male hierarchies are taught to take their place and move in the world.

I actually saw it as both. Just because someone is a patriarchal jerk doesn't mean he can't have feelings. They're just often misguided...

I saw the bullies more as the patriarchal jerks, though. "HAHA, LOOK AT THE GIRLY BOY MINDING HIS OWN BUSINESS, LET'S PICK ON HIM." Wanting your kid to fight back and stand up for himself does not make you a bad person. Parents should want their kids to learn to handle themselves.

If Lil'E had been a girl, D would be exacting revenge on his own instead of trying to teach the girl to fight back, and that would have been a problem.

I agree, Valarie, it's both. And I think that's part of why this is both powerful and poignant. It's complex.

Depends. I discovered that a good technique is absolute passivity. You respond so little that you become boring. After that bullying loses its 'charm.'

Depends entirely on the reasons the bully is bullying, but as blanket advice, that old saw doesn't cut the mustard. And it doesn't stop the bully from being a bully, or foster healthier interactions to replace the bad ones. And, worst case, it invites escalation as the bully pushes harder to get a reaction, or validates that they can get away with shit and you won't do anything.

So, maybe something that can help you get through a certain kind of immediate situation, but it's a piece of blanket advice that could do with a bit of vacation.

This only works when you aren't faced with someone who is truly hateful. Seriously though, total passivity just doesn't work in some cases. You wind up becoming a scapegoat for their hang ups, a whipping boy for their aggressing.

In my personal experiences, being passive just led to more bullying until I either ran away completely, or finally stood my ground. It's sort of been a running theme in my life, since I default to passive most of the time.

As someone who had to change schools for part of high school, running away is sometimes the only viable option to reduce or lessen injury, whether physical or mental.

Yeah, I don't mean to imply that fighting back is the only good option because it's definitely a thing that needs to be taken case by case. I've saved my own sanity a few times by running away and in at least one of those situations it was pretty much the only option.

It just really pisses me off when people are like "it's your job to stop getting bullied" because that is pretty much bullshit.

God! This is so pretentious! Tell us more Dr. Freud. I'm so certain that the bullies were having a nervous laugh as LiL E stood up before them shivering in his boots. He looks so ready to utterly wreck their shit with the tears welling up in his eyes. "Male privilege", "top male hierarchies": bunch of terms made up & thrown about by people seeking to be published & held in high esteem. As for being taught, I'm so sure that CEO & Leaders have such tasks as: 11 am- Teach son how to do a good death glare, 1 pm How finger breaking can really help negotiations, 5pm-6pm Backhanding the uppity women.

Wait, these people are too busy crushing everyone before them & especially keeping women down. They wouldn't have time to teach their son themselves. I wonder how much tuition costs to send them to Tyrannical U boarding school? & if it's somehow tax deductible?
