I learned lots of neat things about Nightvale yesterday, which I'll be keeping to myself.

Also learned how thick fog has to be to make driving scary.

Today I learned that the penguin population in the Falkland islands is booming because of landmines. Penguins are too light to set them off, but it keeps humans from interfering with their breeding/nesting areas. There are an estimated 25,000 land mines still lying around the Falkland islands.

I learned that to pick the right sewing pattern for you, measure your upper bust (if you're female) That's how the original McCall organized his sewing patterns. Somehow, once he died, people started going off the chest measurement instead.

(okay, if you're buying a skirt or pants pattern, this doesn't apply)

D'you mean when you're measuring the pattern pieces directly?

I guess that does make a lot of sense. Making alterations around boobs can be difficult, especially when the pattern assumes you're a C cup and you are an A or a DD or something. I wonder if it would help with that anyway? (I think it'd be ten times easier to have the shoulders and back fit, then figure out the boobs and whatever's under them second. Depending on the pattern, I guess.)

The way they put it : measure your upper bust and choose the pattern size that fits that measurement. If you're a 34, go for the size on the envelope that is for a 34" bust, regardless of the other measurements. If you're a 36, go for the bigger size. If you're a 35, go for the smaller size. It's easier, they said, to alter the boobs, waist, or whatnot.

And yeah, wear the undergarments you plan to wear with that piece of clothing.

Oh, and something one of the presenters said was that patterns are always sized for a B cup, so if you're not a B cup, you're are definitely going to have to do an alteration right out of the packet.

Today, via a picture sent to me as a "joke", I learned what the boob of a woman who has breast fed MULTIPLE children past the ages of 10 looks like . . .

It looks painful

VERY, VERY PAINFUL.

To sum it up in a phrase: Chapped and scarred skin in the shape of teeth.

My wife breast fed our twins for 18 months, and that seemed like a long time. I remember, towards the end, the kids teeth coming in was the #1 factor why she wanted to stop. She wound up having to ween them with a breast pump due to the pain of them feeding with teeth. I showed it to my wife an she reflexively grabbed her chest and went "Ow!"

Neither of us can begin to imagine feeding multiple children past the age of ten while enduring that kind of pain.
