Everyone seems to be assuming that Xanthe is putting the magazine UP. My first reaction was that it was already there and she was taking it DOWN, since she doesn't have it when she first pulls up.

Which... only makes identifying the target demographic more confusing, really.

Moor's link is hilarious.

I think she's putting it up -- if you look in the first frame, all the magazines are equally spaced and in a grid, but the one Xanthe is holding is smaller and overlapping.

The Sisterhood's magazine seems to be parodying the format of a male-centric-porn-magazine, and using that format to poke directly at the type of people who read them. So its target audience is people who see people like that reading those types of magazines, and get offended/annoyed when they refuse to see how wrong it is.

I wonder what articles would be in the magazine.

(Thanks.)

I assume what she first picked up was a spoof of Cosmopolitan (look at the title font):

While the second I assume is Esquire (again, look at the font):

Looking at the covers, Cosmopolitan, definitely.

I don't know about Esquire, though. The font wasn't too similar, and the layout and topics weren't anywhere near similar.

her trike has a compartment that she stores things in. you don't need to see her with it when she first pulls up to make the assumption that she's the one who is providing the magazine. it wouldn't make sense for it to have already been there, because otherwise sam would already KNOW that it's there.

"You don't need no fancy booklearnin'. Just jiggle."

I had forgotten that, and seeing it again has made me laugh heartily.

We don't see her stop the trike or get off of the trike or walk up to the magazine stand, either. We can assume those things happened, however.

I can see a reason why she would be putting the thing up. I don't see a reason why the thing would have been put up and then a sisterhood member would be taking it down.

While the layout is different, the title fonts are both in the style of hand written script. It seemed to fit better than GQ, Maxim, FHM, or any other "men's" magazine I could think of. Also, Esquire, tends to have guys on the cover, usually glorifying 'manliness' . . . I don't know why, but going pretty far back, I've always liked checking out magazine covers and their layouts. I geek out over some weird stuff.

The thing is, I don't think it's parodying any "men's" magazine. I think it's parodying something in more of the "Playboy" genre -- although I'd personally rather not image search for any of those to find a logo and layout that matches.

I mostly ignore things that aren't National Geographic, Rennaissance Magazine, Guitar Player, or LEGO magazine (Stan can read whatever he wants) so all of this is unfamiliar to me.

I'm only familiar with this stuff through what my brain has categorized as "those brightly colored pieces of paper that I ignore at the grocery checkout," and "Cosmocking," from that one blog

It boggles my mind that people actually buy these ... what did you call them, "magazines?"

It's interesting how both magazines revolve around men.

And by interesting I mean burn it quick.

What kind of guitar do you play/what gear you got? (I'm assuming you play guitar because you read Guitar Player)
