Niels Henrik Abel
ya got yer abelian groups, yer abelian theorems, yer abelian surfaces, etc etc
also, if you come up with anything new that seems like it might be analogous to commutativity, you could probably get away with calling it "abelian," at least until the next mathematician to use it starts using your name to describe it, at which point you just give up and start telling people that your favorite snack when you're commuting to work is abelian grapes
and that's just a sad place to be
so the moral of the story is `don't invent new maths` _________________ butts |

Oh yeah, I didn't explain the pun.
an Abelian croup = a commutitive group --> "Abelian" == "commutitive" --> "Abel" == "commute" --> "Abel-ing" == "commuting".
Inventing new maths is the best! You're starting with basically nothing, so the only way to go is in this sort of twisty-weird way that just barely avoids touching on algebraic geometry and category theory twice!
And then even though it's logically derived from your axioms, you'll still confuse your fellow mathematicians enough that one of them will write Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass.
There is a -10% chance that this post makes sense, but it let me link to John Baez, so it was worth it. |

I am slowly but surely turning Christmas into Halloween. Soon Christmas will be nothing but a backdoor out of the holiday season, emptying into the gift shop that is New Year's Day. _________________ ::lesser crisis mode::

You might enjoy this article on a shiny new geometric object that's been created, which makes calculating hugely complex particle physics equations into a (relatively) simple one-term equation... |

I've seen that! It's so pretty! I want to find some sort of class or series of lectures about it, because yeah!
Here, look at this -- http://homotopytypetheory.org/ .
It looks at theorems and axioms and stuff from a topological perspective. I don't honestly understand it that much -- I have the pdf, but I haven't gotten very far into it... |

As it was once explained to me: topology is to geometry as calculus is to algebra. _________________ ...if a single leaf holds the eye, it will be as if the remaining leaves were not there.
