For crying out loud Slick, it annoys me to see you making the same dumb mistake again and again. It doesn't work like that. The one with the cookies is the old lady, not the one with the glasses.

Gosh, this kid never learns.

I think I understand my unconscious contempt for "mainstream" media now. The "mainstream" is created specifically for people who have no courage or creativity or, in many cases, a visible work ethic. They might have unspecified and "misdirected" rage, but there is not the spark of creation or destruction in them, just a banal desire to agree with the publicly held opinions of their neighbors. This is also true, IMO, of conformist youth culture. Porn is just part of a massive cultural matrix that's created not for the sake of "oppression" or any specific political end, but for the dissipation and subjugation of creative impulse. The opium not of "the masses," but of the weak-minded and uncreative, who in our society happen to be, if not the majority, then a significant minority.

I could never imagine Sleaze doing anything really interesting. If he had his way, all he'd do for the rest of eternity is sit and watch strippers. Never giving out tips, never doing anything with them physically, just watching them and maybe hollering something generic every 30 seconds. He fails even as a villain. Which is why he's Slick's perfect shadow. He represents perfectly the banality and creative infertility of his inner life.

This all seems so obvious to me now. I think that I have thought this for some time and am only now putting it in words. I should not delay putting things in words.

That might also be why the laser focus on feminism is a "problem." Although I do like the freedombot and the "awakening" of the devil girls. Not so much because I agree with the moralistic angle, but because I like the angst and character development.

I think with me it's a combination of hype aversion, boredom with the "lowest common denominator", reflexive dislike for things I am forcibly exposed to impersonally on a regular basis in public (like "oldies" rock or anything else that turns up on the radios in public spaces), etc

I know I'm a pushover. I'm wishy-washy, I'm afraid of confrontation, and I don't get riled up about a lot of things.

But I cannot stand it when people look down on people they don't know. The world is full of wonderful, beautiful, lovely, decent, people, not all of whom make a show of being exciting, artistic.

I have NEVER met anyone who I would call weak minded or uncreative. I have met plenty of people who embrace a lot of mainstream culture, but I have NEVER MET ANYONE WHO I WOULD CALL LESS OF A PERSON FOR IT.

If you take the time to get to know people, everyone has that spark of life and beauty in them. They may not show it, they may not broadcast it to the world, but I guarantee you everyone has something in them that's positive and wonderful.

I'm sorry, zarus, I'm not even sure if that's at all what you were trying to say. I just sort of read your post and lost my temper a bit, that's all.

I'm sorry.

Eh, even I have an easy time admitting that I'm kind of a douche. Whatever it is that got you angry is probably exactly what I meant to say. Very Happy

Oh good. I usually try not to be that mean to people. I don't like fights and I don't want you to be angry or think I don't like you.

I feel like the better Slick gets, the worse Kcils gets.

Maybe there will be a point of no return and Kcils will completely split off from Slick. O.o

I don't like a lot of mainstream things because they are not for me. I used to think the people who liked them were inane and thoughtless, then I realized they are a different market than I am. There is candy I like too, and there is nothing wrong with wanting or needing candy.

After keeping up with the Ellen show and thinking about all the times people bring up current films and shows that rehash the same thing over and over, it occurred to me that each of these people are living actual full lives with actual struggles. Every opinion forms from actual life experience; no one popped up out of the blue complete with deadset opinions right before i passed by. They have had to stop and consider things too.

So I don't divide the world into brainless zombies and fully aware people anymore. Life seems better this way, and it gives me the opportunity to actually experience my own flaws. No idea if i'll ever fully understand what those are or if I get to control them, but i find it's better to acknowledge than ignore them.

Very good synopsis.

my problem is when people dislike something simply because it's popular or they deem it too mainstream... not because they personally dislike it, but because too many do like it. Now if that's how you operate, then go ahead and dislike something because it's popular but i agree with Istancow on not looking down on the people who do follow the mainstream.

Damnit Slick, you don't get prizes for doing what everyone should be doing.

Back in the days when Sinfest wasn't one-dimensional self-bashing for not being an eunuch, things used to be more convincing, funny and full of richness and depth at the same time:

We are all - male and female - placed in a cruel game that gives us different physical equipment and therefore different sexual priorities and strategies.
But no! Sea turtles, feel guilty for your proclivity to swim!
