I didn't realize Texas was that big.

In my experience, it takes somewhere between four days and a week to drive coast to coast across the USA. Depends on where you go, how often you stop, and what kitschy tourist things you want to do.

well, there is. Amtrak, yo.

it's just roughly as expensive as flying but also much slower.

I've found it's more expensive, but I go for the cheapest of flights. I'm told if we had invested more in railways instead of being butts, we'd have cheap train transportation, and that pisses me off - because you can get a sleeper car on a train or walk around, but on busses you have to sit the whole time.

Greyhound is so awful.

It takes just as long to get from Bellingham to Portland by train as it does by bus, despite there being significantly less traffic and fewer stop lights on railways, and it costs 50% more.

Easy way to fund a modern rail infrastructure: make every member of Congress take a cross country trip on a Greyhound. Those who survive will leap to drive the bus industry out of business.

If they get put on one of the buses with WiFi or have a phone, they could all have a mini meeting and pass the laws on the bus.

It's a four hour drive from here to the nearest train station, and the only bus out of town goes in the opposite direction

Yeah it's really a waste because passenger railways are the bomb. If the government hadn't subsidized airports and planes so much things would've looked very different.

If we hadn't subsidized "defense" spending so much we could have had both, plus a shitload more space missions. Our priorities are all kinds of screwed up.

I LOVED the Piroshki. Small note, I ran to Pike Place the morning before our return flight to Illinois and purchased like 4 or 5 to eat on the long plane ride. Smile

In my experience, a coast-to-coast drive can be done in 48 hours.

That, of course, include few stops and no touristy things.
