Astronomers say they have discovered a planet with a gigantic ring system that is 200 times larger than that around Saturn.

It is the first such structure detected around a planet beyond our Solar System.

The researchers say there are probably more than 30 rings, each measuring tens of millions of kilometres in diameter.

How does 'Bling' sound for the name of a planet?

It's incredibly to me that for the past 20 years, we've lived in a world with known planets around other stars. Until about 1995, the existence of planets around any stars other than the Sun was purely hypothetical.

Some other exoplanet news: Planets almost 3x older than Earth. When our solar system was forming, these things were already about 7 billion years old. They formed only about 2 billion years after the Universe's first generation of stars died.

Added bonus: The "star" they found these planets clinging two was also discovered to be a trinary star system. Three suns!

Bonus bonus: One of the pieces of software used to analyze the data is called "Asteroseismology Made Easy."

See, Michael, see! I said Dyson Sphere's were a thing! They're building one around 'Bling'!

*downvoting this thread for not having the Roman Numeric denotation for it's run in 'World Of Science!' threads, sorry MS*

i had actually forgotten they were once frequent enough to require a count...yes, good to have them back.

we can maybe start lettering them. this would be World of Science A.
