Good thinking, MT.
Try installing an antivirus program and A-Squared, updating them, and then rebooting into safe mode . Then scan for stuff with both programs (one at a time), delete any malware it finds, and then try rebooting back into normal mode. You may have to try again with your System Restore feature disabled if you're using Windows XP, a lot of viruses will hide in your Restore Points and bring themselves back.
[Edit]
And don't get discouraged, this kind of thing happens to everybody once in a while. There are a lot of vicious malware out there that will disable most attempts at removing them. I've had to spend entire days cleaning out hundreds of trojans, viruses, and spyware after my little brother installed Kazaa.
As a method of last resort, if you really don't have any computernerd friends (I really do recommend going to any that you have and asking them for help), there's always Hijack This! This is a desperation tool when all else has failed. You install the program to your desktop, let it run, the go to their forum and post the results. They'll guide you through the removal process. |

I haven't used a virus scanner in many years and had no incidents.
This is because I make smart decisions.
Smart decisions are not infallible, but they're much better than a virus scanner.
Virus scanners could potentially be the source of the infection, but old, proven software cant be the source of the infection. |

This is true, I went 4 months with no virus scanner or spyware scanner and when I finally did install and scan my PC, I had one spyware file on it and it was a process that I shut down manually everytime I turned my PC on (because I didn't know what the fuck it was).
Being cautions is the best way to work. The Virus Scanner and Spyware scanners are a good idea though. |

If it's the VirusBurst one, Safe Mode doesn't stop it. I googled "remove virusburst", ended up here, and the instructions and roguescanfix link at that site took care of it. _________________ There are 4 boxes to use in the defense of liberty: soap, ballot, jury, ammo. I have the ultimate virus protection... its called a windows clean install disk... it really gets rid of those damn things one word of caution if you use adaware scan a coulple times. its ussually pretty good on catching things but if you get certain adware that likes to hang around porn like cool websearch it has a tendancy to survive removal. or you can just get in your registry and do all that fun stuff. |

| There used to be a CoolWebSearch removal tool, but it hasn't been updated in about a year and so it's probably next to no good. |

It's also not much better than any of the free programs, and in fact it may be specifically worked around more often. |

| I have honestly no love for norton. Its basically like having a virus on your computer so you feel like you dont have to worry about another virus. Mom had it on her comp for about a month in which time i tried countless times to convince her to get rid of it in leiu of AVG. nortons auto protect eats up a lot of ram and im told L2 cashe constantly. beside that it (at least in my experience.) seems to take liberties you dont nessicarily want it to take such as shutting down your network or blocking sites without your consent. Mom kept refusing to let me remove it because she thought it made her safer. finally it kicked off her internet 3 times in under 5 minutes and she got so disgusted with it she asked me to remove it. (shes not good with comps... like at all... internet browsing is difficult to her.) since then shes commented on how her computer runs much more smoothly and her internet hasnt kicked off since. i myself had it once on a free trial a freind gave me and i got rid of it after 2 hours. |

Norton kicked her off the internet? I have been using Norton AV year after upgraded year, and I have no idea what you are talking about.
The only thing I don't like about Norton AV is that they put another stupid icon in the task bar that you can't easily hide, which pisses me off about any new utility software these days. _________________ The Truth is out there. |

| Yeah if i shut off norton i could restart the modem and get the internet back but if i left it on it would stay offline... it was really weird. I cant say for sure it was norton but based off the evidence it seems quite likely. |
