i wonder if there's some way to get the old meaning of transracial reclaimed. right now i would fully expect the definition to change, barring something unprecedented.

It may be being used wrong all over the news and internet, but the term as-established is solidly ensconced in psychological and sociological literature, and those who are aware of the fact are pushing back against the hur-dee-hurs. So I wouldn't go out and justify this sudden new usage on the basis of a couple of weeks worth of colloquial malappropriation.

to be clear, I wouldn't justify it either ó it's an observation of what is happening as opposed to a declaration on what ought to be. my honest assessment of the situation is that this new definition of transracialism is inexorably slated to replace the previous one. Or, at least, that's the vastly more likely outcome given what we're seeing right now.

though, maybe, if there's some form of organized pushback on the term that gets some pretty significant sway across social media, that could get turned around.

I think the general population has no idea that transracial has a meaning in the social sciences. I also think the two definitions are likely to co-exist in different circles, in the way a lot of psychological terms (anal retentive, for instance) have different popular and scientific meanings.

I suspect people made the word up, unaware that it actually existed and had a meaning beforehand.

My first thought when hearing about her was about this white character from M*A*S*H* who believed he was actually Japanese.

Also, it reminded me of Anime fans who get so wrapped up in bits of Japanese culture that they seem to expect they appear Japanese to other people. I assume this is pretty common.
