Well, I checked the first and second pages, but I couldn't find one. It is possible that I DO NOT KNOW HOW TO READ ANYMORE.

Anyway, does anyone know Chinese? I am working on a new story about SAILORS and I am monstrously inspired by Ana's talk of her Dad's Chinese sea beast nightmares.

So my questions include, if you do know Chinese, what is the Chinese word for squid? And Queen. Or empress or something like that? Can you also spell the words phonetically? I'm just in the playing around stages at the mo.

Anyway. Thanks!

Shareware that will let you have definitions as well as the characters, romanization, and a spoken pronunciation.

Edit: actually, it might not have the romanization. crap. hang on.

Edit again: nope, no romanization. But that, plus pronunciation & romanization guide should be enough to get you by.

Or that might be way, way too much work. Very Happy

Hmm, work, you say? I have heard of this fabled work.

Thanks, dude! I was hoping for someone who could speak it to help with how the words actually go together and grammar and hootnannying like that.

Actually from what I know those are spoken dialects with some minor changes to the writing, like spelling and structure differences between the UK and American versions of English.

I know chinese.

kind of.

I have to double check with my mom or dad, though, but I think squid is pheonetically "zhun-yu"... I think, and I'm sure the term 'empress" have a specific term, but all I can think of right now is "huan-dee", which mean emporor.

Wow, Mr Squidbunny. This morning I was resigning myself to starting a "Ask Sinfest" thread because I didn't think one existed in the new forum. May I please hijack your thread?

***

I've been invited to a party celebrating the end of Ramadan next weekend. My family (and my in-laws) will be the only non-Muslim people there. Does anyone know where I could find information as to how to be good guests? (i.e., should we bring gifts to the family who invited us, how should we dress, etc.)

Thank you in advance.

***

Thank you, Mr Squidbunny. *hug*

General Ramadan FAQ which outlines some basic behavorial requirements.

A Blog by an American woman living in a Muslim nation, with some basic info on what Ramadan entails for Muslims. Thought that might be a useful person to contact.

Again, sorry, no first hand information on my part. =\

It's my suspicion, though, that whoever did the inviting will likely understand that you are NOT Muslims and will not expect you to behave perfectly; hence, it might be advisable to follow basic guidelines, e.g. conservative dress for women (not difficult in the increasingly cold weather), bringing a small gift that abides by Muslim consumption standards (including increased dietary restrictions specifically for Ramadan), etc.

Basically, if you don't go dressed like you're going to a nightclub and refrain from bringing wine as a gift, you'll likely be okay, unless whoever invited you is deliberately trying to trap you.

I'm Japanese, Kara's Okinawan, Celia's Korean, and I believe Kitten is Vietnamese.

But we do all speak Chinese, fluently.

I hope to one day be as enlightened as you.

EDIT: want me to put in little 'sarcasm' tags for you there so you don't get confused?
