Okay, here's the hope.

That devil-Squig is indulging in violence against johnbies in his dreams is meant to convey how easy and appealing it is to target johns as The Problem, and how it satisfies a power fantasy to attack a foe, who is responsible for all the wrong in the world. But this is the naive approach.

Squig has always been a material, creature comfort sort of character. I imagine his devil side as a representation of overindulgent hedonism. This is meant to show how the whole narrative of attacking mindless agents of evil is really just an indulgent power fantasy.

The issues are systemic. It's not like labelling the pimps and johns as subhuman is going to solve the issue. The abusive nature of the system will guarantee more will take their place. Instead, it requires looking at the system as a whole, and really engaging with the nebulous answers that don't always feel visceral and satisfying.

And then I realize where this particular strip and I part ways, because I realize the strip itself says nothing about what that solution could look like, and if we look back over the comic's history, the solution seems to be to take the simple, feel-good solution of shutting everything down. Which is just the same issue here writ large. Shuttering a red light district is only going to force it into back alleys, where the clients are more abusive, the protections are scarce, and the economic spiral deeper.

But maybe this is just the start of the messages getting more nuanced. Maybe this is the ship righting itself before plotting a new course. Maybe the black and white is getting shades of grey.

Unfortunately since it is the dark side dreaming, it probably has more to do with violently removing competition than for any benevolent reasons.

Nothing new. Bad guy vs evil one.
Oversimplified.

I think it's the fruits of "bro-hug your dark side".

Squig has shown compassion to his devil self, and is winning it's loyalty to his own causes. His devil self doesn't put up much of fight because he doesn't fight it directly. He leads it.

Slick has fought his dark side, tries to suppress it, so it's become stronger and much more resentful.

This idea a dualistic nature presented before in other media. It's quite interesting. There was a Star Trek episode with a similar premise. A transporter accident split Kirk into two people. One dominated by higher order things like compassion and ethics, and another more animalistic individual dominated by emotion, getting results at any cost, and his own selfish motivations.

"Good Kirk" was ineffectual, and "animal" Kirk was a menace. The idea presented was an individual needs both parts to function. The good leading, and the "bad"doing what's needed to get results.

The idea is pretty old though. While Taoism doesn't have modern concepts of good and bad, it does have a concept of balance, and action without action. For example, Squig leads his dark side not by fighting it into compliance like Slick ineffectually attempts to, but instead throws a blanket on his dark side, and goes about his life, not fighting it but not letting it lead him. He defeats it by not fighting it.

It's nice to see that even our darkest side doesn't have to be a chauvinistic pig. It can be a good pig.
Also, "the hero lies in you" was almost a line from that sentimental song I remember Mariah Carey sings and that's very pleasing. Thanks, Tat.
